This is a TVN special feature, a lot of people speculated about the ‘Theory’ of time travel that Sam Beckett used, but Al explained it very well in the pilot.
The theory is shown in full below.
“One end of this string represents your birth and the other end your Death. Tie the ends together and your life is a loop. Ball the loop and the days of your life touch each other out of sequence. Therefore, moving from one point of the string to another, moves you backwards or forwards within your own lifetime”
